Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa was a thriving religious and commercial hub in Sri Lanka some 800 years ago. Giving passionate history buffs, all the more reason to visit the ancient ruins of places and temples, Polonnaruwa shed light on the grand past of the island. Some must visit sites include the Kiri Vihara, Rankot Vihara, and the Sacred Quadrangle.

While the city can be reached approximately in five hours from Colombo, those not too keen on making the long tiring drive can perhaps consider booking a flight with a domestic airline such as Cinnamon Air to get there fast!

This UNESCO World Heritage site too is located in the dry zone, so contemplate visiting during the cooler months January to early May. Its also a great place to discover the local cuisine, so maybe enrolling yourself in a traditional cooking class can be on the agenda as well!
